The Provo Tabernacle Fire

While attending Brigham Young University I had the pleasure of visiting the Provo Tabernacle on various occasions. Its age is close to 130 years and its rich history was always a pride of the community.
The organ pipes are nestled behind the pulpit. The beautiful columns supported the balcony enriched with lovely wood details and seated just below the beautiful arched windows. The old wood benches filled the auditorium awaiting visitors to come and partake of something wonderful . It was a place for student firesides, stake conferences, musical productions, and most importantly a place of worship.

Disaster struck early Friday morning December 17. A security guard spotted smoke billowing from a tower and so it continued.

And through it all
a
message
of
hope.

A painting of Christ is discovered among the wreckage.
It is scorched, burned, and blackened all around his image.
I think the face of the young fireman speaks clearly.

Oh my gosh Melanie, this brought tears to my eyes and chills throughout my body! What a tragedy for such a beautiful place but I am speechless about the painting. I have heard things like this but never seen them in person. This is so amazing and does show us that God is with us and will not leave us in a time of sorrow. Just beautiful!
Thank you so much for sharing this.

that ius amazing... and one week before christmas. i think the message through it all is to remember the reason for the holiday. so many people get caught up in the shopping and commercialism, but we celebrate giving because christ gave himself for us.

Good grief what an utter disaster - that is so sad. I'm not even religious in the slightest and that has touched me too.

Oh how tragic! I grew up in Salt Lake City. I had a lot of family that were LDS and lived in that area. I loved that gorgeous building. I am sorry for all of you that have lost this treasure. Thank you for sharing the pictures. I saw nothing on the news about it out here in Toledo, Ohio.

Blessings,
Shelley

Beautiful commemoration of the Tabernacle past, and it's tragic demise. Thank you for this lovely post. My heart hopes fervently that the building can be saved and restored.

Melanie, My husband just told me about this so I searched for what was going on and found your blog entry about it. I am SO sad about this, I hope they try to restore what they can, what a tragedy!

I cannot believe the picture of the Savior survived that way, how incredible. It actually got me tearing up!

Anyway, wanted to say hi, sorry it is on such a sad post!
