FAQs

Here we go. The long awaited post on some of our most frequently asked questions. I know that we are not covering everything here and it will continue to be a work in process. We have received so many emails lately and I apologize that I have not been able to respond to each of them personally. I do my best with the time I have. However, please feel free to email us again if your question was not answered. Just a little reminder will help us a lot!

WHAT KIND OF SPRAYER DO YOU USE?

We use two prayers. We use a Husky Pro HVLP (high volume low pressure) Gravity Feed Spray Gun. Model #HDS89099AV. The HDS890 us an HVLP gravity spray gun designed to spray all light to medium viscosity materials. Enamels, lacquers, polyurethane top coats (including base coat / clear coat) and all primers. The spray gun has a fluid, air, and pattern controls. This spray gun is supplied with 800ml & 200 ml gravity feed cups.

The second sprayer we use is the Husky Gravity Feed HVLP Spray Gun. Model #HDS79000AV. The gravity feed spray gun is designed to eliminate material waste in the cup saving you money. It incorporates precision machined components to deliver outstanding finishes. HVLP design increases transfer efficiency and decreases paint consumption.

WHAT KIND OF AIR COMPRESSOR DO YOU USE?

Husky 2.0 Running HP 30 Gallon Vertical Compressor. Model #VT6315. This is a solid cast iron, twin cylinder compressor pump for extreme durability. It offers 135 PSI maximum pressure and air delivery 6.2/5.5 SCFM (standard cubic feet of air per minute). This is important when choosing a compressor that meets the requirements for your paint sprayer.

WHAT KIND OF PAINT DO YOU USE?

Our preference is to stay with a waterborne paint product as often as possible. Oil based paints and lacquer require really good ventilation in your work space.

Our first choice of paint for most furniture is Benjamin Moore (Aura) interior in the satin finish. It is more expensive per gallon but coverage and quality is unbeatable. When spraying, Aura covers in just two to three coats. And just two coats with a brush.

Our second choice is Behr Ultra Premium Plus (paint and primer in one). This covers fairly well compared to most paints and is durable. When spraying it requires approximately five coats and three to four coats with a brush.

WHAT PAINT COLORS DO YOU USE?

Our vintage white is called Frostine (AF-5) and our classic black is the standard black in the Benjamin Moore family.

Our vintage white is called Swiss Coffee and our classic black is called Forever Black in the Behr family.

Brooke's red buffet is a Behr paint color called Indiscreet that we had matched at our Benjamin Moore store.

Our robin egg blue paint is a Behr paint called Liquid Blue however we have mixed whites with it on different levels based upon what we were refinishing.

WHERE DO YOU BUY AURA PAINT?

We get our paint at Wilson's Quality Paint & Decor in Kaysville Utah. You can find Aura at most Benjamin Moore stores but visit Wilson's in Kaysville and you will receive outstanding service. For more information click here to visit their website!

HOW DO YOU DISTRESS YOUR PIECES?

All of our distressing is done by hand with 120 grit sandpaper. Basic distressing is done by rubbing the edge of sand paper along lines and designs. For a more shabby chic look go ahead and distress door and drawer fronts as well as table tops.

Still to come we will post tips on paint conditioners, glazing, and painting with a brush. Also we have had tons of questions on refinishing pianos so we will address that as well. Thanks for your patience!

Thank you! You are so generous with your information. Many people won't do that. We wanted to know the name of a color of a home painted in Cape Cod for our barn and the owner wouldn't tell us even though we lived in another state. Her husband took us over to the side and told us and said that they even added more black to it to get that perfect red:)So thank you once again:)

Thank you, I was dying to know whether you spray painted. I have painted some furniture with a brush and it is a pain.

When you are refinishing an old piece like the one you did for Brooke, what do you do prep-wise to get it ready to paint? I've always heard that you have to strip or sand the polyurethane off of it before you paint. Is that true? If so, how do you do that on the detailed part of the piece?
